Overview
Coastal communities rely heavily on the Marine and fisheries sectors for their socioeconomic development. However, the sector faces many challenges such as overfishing, the impact of climate change, and limited access to markets and resources. Marine tourism can be considered as one of the aspects that can be researched for the economic development of coastal communities. The Center for Marine and Fisheries Research (PRKP) is dedicated to answering these challenges through research and development activities. The division aims to develop innovative solutions, policies and strategies to drive sustainable and inclusive growth in the Marine and fisheries sector.
Focus Research:
The focus of research conducted by the Socio-Economic Center for Marine and Fisheries Research (PRKP) can be:
- Assessment of the socio-economic impact of overfishing: examining the socio-economic consequences of overfishing in coastal communities can provide valuable insight into the extent to which this problem affects the livelihoods of local communities. This research can help identify specific challenges facing coastal communities as a result of overfishing and propose solutions to mitigate its negative impacts.
- Climate change adaptation and resilience in the Marine and fisheries sector: investigating the impacts of climate change on coastal communities, including rising sea levels, ocean acidification, and changes in marine biodiversity, can help develop strategies for adaptation and resilience. Research can focus on identifying sustainable practices, technologies, and policies that enable coastal communities to address and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
- Market access and value chain analysis: examining the barriers and limitations that coastal communities face in accessing markets and resources can provide insights to improve market relations and enhance value chains. Research in this area can explore strategies to expand market opportunities, promote fair trade practices, and strengthen the participation of coastal communities in the global economy.
- Sustainable development of marine tourism: investigating the potential of marine tourism as an economic development opportunity for coastal communities can be a focal point. This research can explore tourism potential, assess the socioeconomic impact of Tourism Development, identify best practices for Sustainable Tourism Management, and propose policies and strategies to support the sustainable and inclusive growth of the marine tourism industry.
- Community-based approaches and Empowerment: researching community-based approaches can focus on understanding the role of local communities in the sustainable management of marine resources and Fisheries. This research can investigate how community engagement, participation and empowerment can contribute to the development of innovative solutions and policies that promote sustainable and inclusive growth in the sector.
